Biography

MSG Richard Guard, a native of Redlands, California, enlisted in the United States Army as a Cavalry Scout in February of 2004. He graduated from Basic Training and follow on OSUT training receiving the MOS of 19D in the rank of Private First Class. Upon graduation MSG Guard received orders for Fort Carson Colorado and was deployed in support of OIF 6 months later.

MSG Guard is currently assigned as the Senior Military Science Instructor within the Tulane University ROTC program. Prior to his position in Louisiana, he served as the First Sergeant of both Comanche Troop, 1-7 CAV, and Cowboy Troop, 10th CAV in the 1st Cavalry Division. MSG Guard has served in leadership positions to include Team Leader, Squad Leader, Section Sergeant, Platoon Sergeant and First Sergeant. Additionally, MSG Guard served over 24 Months as a Battalion Master Gunner and nine months as an Operations Sergeant Major. MSG Guard has three combat tours in support of OIF and OEF. 

MSG Guard is a graduate of the Basic Leader Course, Advanced Leader Course, Senior Leader Course, Master Leader Course, Bradley Master Gunner Course, Air Assault School, Military Advisor Training Academy, Common Faculty Development-Instructor Course and University Senior Leader Course. 

MSG Guard’s awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (2 awards), Army Commendation Medal (6 awards), Army Achievement Medal (6 awards), National Defense Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Korea Defense Service Metal.

MSG Guard is married to Kyong Guard of Copperas Cove, Texas and they have one daughter.
